Peer Education and Training
According to a recent study, 60-70% of the students in secondary schools have used alcohol and illicit drugs before.
Abuse of “Traditional” drugs such as alcohol, tobacco, marijuana is still rampant, but the emergence of these new substances has tremendously escalated this problem.
Alcohol and other Drug Abuse is increasingly becoming the biggest threat to our society and yet very little is known about the Causes, Manifestations, and Prevention and Recovery options available.
Focus on Recovery Uganda in collaboration with the office of the dean of students has successfully set up a student’s led club at Kyambogo University, known as Kyambogo University Rehabilitative Initiative (KYURI), and we intend to replicate it in secondary schools and other universities around the country.
This club aims to push back against the problem of substance abuse and problem behavior such as gambling, sex addiction, gaming, pornography, et al, amongst the student population and surrounding areas.
We aim to train some willing students in these schools, form them into clubs, and they in return will sensitize their fellow students, as well as intervene in cases of use and also direct severe cases towards treatment.
